CITY OF SOUTHAMPTON
YOUTH LEAGUE U/16 - Sunday 16 Sept 2007
In one of the matches of the day, Division 1’s Salisbury City
defeated visitors AFC Stoneham 6 – 3 in an excellent game. Salisbury City
were two up within the first twenty minutes with Stoneham pegging one back
before half time. Within five minutes of the restart, Salisbury City
netted again but Stoneham
responded swiftly making the score 3 - 2. Salisbury
then scored twice and in the last ten minutes both teams added a goal each to
make the final score 6- 3 to Salisbury.
Salisbury City's goals were scored by Andre
Borland (hat-trick), Jamie Penfold, Adam Payne and Jack Brooks. Scorers
for Stoneham
were Lewis Price-Lloyd, Adam Collier and Kieron
Williams. In the same division Eastleigh Spitfires edged out Whitecroft &
Barton 3-2 in a very competitive, high quality game. The wind was a major
advantage for Eastleigh in the first half as
they sped into a 3-0 lead after just twenty minutes. The first goal came from a
long throw which caught W&B cold, the second arose from a mix up between W&B's keeper and centre half Bradley Salter with the
clearance cannoning back off the defender into his own net. The third was a
well-worked move ending in a quality finish by Eastleigh's
centre forward. Two second half substitutions by W&B saw the visitors claw one
back through Callum Taylor after a great run and cross by Ian Frazer. With
the wind now behind them, W&B pressurised the home side with centre forward
Peter Traveskis working tirelessly throughout to create
chances for his team mates. A second was added by substitute Ian Frazer. The
majority of the second half was played in Eastleigh's half
but despite a number of chances created by W&B's
strikers Eastleigh held on for a 3-2
victory.
Division 2
witnessed another entertaining encounter as Alresford Town
played hosts to Colden Common. Alresford
dominated the first half, and went close to taking the lead on a number of
occasions but were denied by excellent goalkeeping by Colden Common's Freddie Eley. Sam Butcher hit the post with a low shot from the
edge of the penalty area. Tom Beecher who had an excellent match in midfield
for Alresford also had a shot well saved. From an Alex Dobson corner, Matt
Jones hit a fierce first time close range shot that finally gave Alresford the
lead they deserved. The home goalkeeper Matt Harris made a superb reflex tip
over the bar to keep Alresford in the lead. Their second goal came from the
penalty spot. Kyle Bradford was pushed over as
he challenged for a high ball, and captain Sam Butcher stepped up to score the
penalty. The first half finished 2-0 with Alresford unlucky
not to be further in front. A more even and end to end second half
followed. It started well for Alresford when Jack Mills hit a dangerous free
kick into the box, that Liam Jones guided into the
corner with a well controlled volley. Colden Common got back into the match
when Sam Hockham hit a superb 30 yard shot into the
top corner and for the first time in the match put Alresford under real
pressure. Late in the game, Colden Common were given a
penalty for hand ball and Ben Weerasekera confidently
struck it into the corner to make it 3-2. Alresford regrouped and came back at
Colden Common and got the final goal of the match two minutes from the end. Captain
Sam Butcher made an impressive run through the middle and, as he went to shoot,
he was tripped and a penalty was given. Jack Mills stepped up and hit a
powerful penalty into the back of the net to make the final score 4-2 and give
Alresford a well deserved victory. Meanwhile Littleton gained a comfortable 4-2 win in their
opening match of the season against Titchfield United. After an even opening
half-hour, Will Vaughan's strong effort was
tipped over for a corner and from it James Philpot's header was cleared off the
line and then Michael Mustoe's shot was blocked on
the line. Four minutes later Littleton
took the lead when Liam Flaherty's corner was headed in by Matt Seymour.
Titchfield equalised six minutes into the second half with a firm shot, but in
the 50th minute another pinpoint corner by Flaherty was headed goalwards by Philpot and Duncan Bray helped it over the
line. A swift break started by Joe Lewis set up Bray to twist through the
defence to score the third while Vaughan
capped an impressive debut in midfield with a deserved fourth on 80 minutes.
Titchfield grabbed their second with a header at the far post in the fourth
minute of added time.
In Division 3,
Harry Hunt grabbed two goals and Daryl Brimfield one as Winchester Youth posted
a 3-0 victory over Calmore Rangers.
Division 4 also saw some exciting action as Hythe Strikers and
Hamble Club Youth shared six goals. Hythe strikers dominated in the first half
rewarded with three well-taken goals. After a stern half-time team talk, Hamble
Club Youth replied with three goals themselves. Two came from central
midfielder Mark Osbourne and one from Oliver Hadley
with Kieron Green excelling for Hamble. Fleming Park was the venue as Phoenix Rangers
succumbed 2-0 to visitors Bitterne Youth both goals coming from Matt Giles.
